KEITH SIMPKINS
Keith Simpkins grew up in the rural mountains of Virginia in the 1970s, where Christmas was filled with wonder, tradition, and a hint of mystery. Over time, the holiday’s commercialism dulled its magic for him, but later in life, he rediscovered his love for the season - stronger and deeper than before. Today, he celebrates Christmas with equal parts nostalgia and curiosity, immersing himself in its history, folklore, and enduring spirit.
An avid blogger, photographer, and runner, Keith is also a devoted researcher of holiday traditions. Before writing A Christmas Menagerie, he spent years exploring the legends and figures of midwinter celebrations around the world. His travels have taken him from small village markets in Slovakia to the Kukeri festival in the mountains of Bulgaria, seeking both the festive and the forgotten sides of the season.
Now based in Cleveland, Keith welcomes Christmas early -decorating on November 1st, celebrating the city’s winter traditions, and filling his home with four trees, including a black Krampus-themed one. His love for Christmas is matched only by his love for horror, and every December he blends A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker with campy holiday slashers and Krampus festivals.
The first story in A Christmas Menagerie began on a winter drive home from a Christmas market in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania - typed on his phone as holiday lights flickered past. What started as a passing thought became a collection that imagines what happens when Santa's shadow comes calling.
